The Blanchard’s have trusted my eye with their family photos for the past six years. So when I had the idea that I wanted to delve into in-home documentary photography, I knew they’d be excited to have me photograph an average Saturday with their family. No posing, no setups, just hanging out and capturing the moments that unfold.
The first image I captured when I walked into their home is the one above. Sabrina had requested “three Elsa braids.”
They jump on the bed every morning to wake up dad.
Sabrina likes to scramble her own eggs.
Ryn sounds out the words and underlines them with her finger when she reads.
She is, and always has been, an expert at making a frowny face.
Princess dresses are the perfect outfit for hiking in the woods, of course.
And these sisters truly love each other.
Also, a peek into my editing process. It may surprise you how important post processing can be when it comes to photography. I always strive to be in control of using the best lighting in camera, but sometimes special moments happen in a dark room. (Haha, pun intended!) Thanks to Lightroom‘s masking tool, I was able to subtly shade and highlight areas in this image to draw the viewer’s eye where I wanted. The transformation is unbelievable.
